How I Work
Seeing the bigger picture and connecting the dots
I am at my best in complex environments where different interests, perspectives and levels of an organization or organizations come together. I naturally look beyond individual departments or disciplines and focus on the bigger picture: identifying dependencies, competing interests and opportunities for connection and help translate these into a coherent way forward.
I am comfortable navigating not only the substantive aspects of an issue, but also the organizational, political and strategic context surrounding it. Bringing together perspectives across organizational boundaries, levels and stakeholder groups.
What I bring
Challenging the obvious path
I am not inclined to follow established routes simply because they are established. If a conventional approach does not seem appropriate, I will say so. I make bottlenecks, friction and underlying tensions visible and explore alternative scenarios — including the opportunities, consequences and risks that come with them.
Creating value from expertise
In my opinion people contribute most when they are able to use their expertise and take ownership of what they are good at. For me, stakeholder involvement is therefore not about involving people simply because it is desirable to have everyone represented. It is about understanding what each person or party can contribute, what they want to achieve, and how that can strengthen the process and its outcome.
Making collaboration purposeful
I have little patience for meetings that exist because there is a meeting on the calendar. Before bringing people together, there should be a clear purpose, a defined question or objective, and sufficient preparation and input to make the conversation worthwhile. I value people's time and prefer focused interaction that leads to insight, decisions or action.
Thriving in complexity and pressure
Complex processes involving multiple stakeholders, conflicting interests and uncertainty are the best. The more challenging the context or the greater the pressure, the more focused and energetic I tend to become. Complexity does not put me off; it is often where I can add the most value.
Working with people who bring energy and courage
I thrive in environments with people who have expertise, entrepreneurial spirit, energy and the courage to challenge assumptions. I value intellectual curiosity, initiative and people who are willing to take responsibility rather than simply protect existing structures.
Where I am less strong
Environments where maintaining the status quo is more important than solving the actual problem, or where process has become an end in itself don’t suit me.
I can be direct when I see that something is not working, particularly when unnecessary complexity, organizational habits or political considerations are getting in the way of progress. That directness can sometimes be uncomfortable, but I see constructive friction as useful when it helps uncover what is really happening.
Not naturally drawn to visibility for visibility's sake. I am much more interested in whether something actually improves, develops or contributes to the world around us and not the organization itself.
That means I may be less suited to environments where success is primarily measured by visibility, presentation or adherence to established ways of working.
Where I can add most value
I am particularly effective when:
- a challenge crosses departmental or organizational boundaries; - multiple stakeholders have different interests, responsibilities or perspectives;
- the route forward is not immediately obvious;
- there is a need to connect strategic, operational and political realities;
- existing approaches are no longer delivering what is needed;
- complex decisions need to be translated into practical action;
- there is pressure, uncertainty or a high degree of interdependence;
- expertise needs to be brought together without losing ownership or accountability.
In these situations, I can contribute as a strategic connector, critical thinker, facilitator and catalyst for progress — someone who sees the broader picture, makes tensions and choices explicit, connects the right people and helps create a route forward that is both realistic and purposeful.
What motivates me
Ultimately, I am motivated by meaningful contribution rather than visibility. I am less interested in doing things because they are expected, conventional or look good from the outside. I am interested in understanding what genuinely needs to happen, bringing the right people and perspectives together, challenging what no longer works, and contributing to development and progress that has real value.
